In the mid-1980s, even as his Hollywood career was taking off with movies such as Mala Noche and Drugstore Cowboy, Gus Van Sant kept up his photography practice. He took black-and-white polaroid portraits of the actors he cast, often unknowns, in his films. And when he went on to make big-budget studio features in the 90s, movies like Good Will Hunting, he kept doing portraits. For the first U.S. exhibition of Van Sant’s photography in over a decade, 15 of those portraits are on view. Subjects range from David Bowie to Jonathan Rhys Meyers. —Jensen Davis
