When Rihanna appeared at the Met gala in 2015, she stopped the red-carpet show in a fur-trimmed cape of Chinese Imperial yellow. That cape was designed by the Chinese couturier Guo Pei, and it sent a message to the world: Guo was playing in the same league as Western wunderkinds like John Galliano and the late Alexander McQueen. There’s no question that Guo, born in Beijing in 1967, thinks big. She also thinks historically, taking inspiration from China’s rich Imperial past—and also from cities and aesthetics beyond her own country. With splendor to rival Versailles, “Guo Pei: Art of Couture” presents 43 of her amazing creations, complete with shoes, headpieces, and jewelry. Three garments from Guo’s 2012 Chinese Bride collection make their American debut as well. This is a completely different exhibition from the Guo Pei show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. —Laura Jacobs
