Sonia Delaunay, born Sarah Elievna Stern in 1885, in Odessa, enrolled in art school in Paris in 1905, but quickly became unhappy. Dissatisfied with the rigidity of her professors, she wandered through the galleries of Paris instead of attending class, finding inspiration in artists who were anything but academic—Post-Impressionists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, and the Fauvist Henri Matisse. Six years later, having married Robert Delaunay, she became a leading figure in a movement founded by her husband—Orphism, a form of Cubism. As Sonia said of the Orphists, “In the sky we had rediscovered the moving principle of any work of art: the light, and the motion of color.” She painted geometric shapes in bright, contrasting colors and turned her designs into textiles for dresses. This exhibition covers Delaunay’s entire career, from the 1910s through the 1970s. —Jensen Davis
