“I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed.” That’s Lloyd Dobler, played by John Cusack in Say Anything, explaining his future plans to his girlfriend’s father. It could also be Marc Jacobs, introducing his new makeup line. When asked who he imagines as the audience, he said, “I haven’t really given it any thought. I do what I do. I put it out there and hope for the best. I can’t control the results and I’m not big on focus groups and all that kind of information. I just have to trust my instincts. You know, so far, so good.” That’s for sure.
Besides, good luck trying to pigeonhole Jacobs—in both his fashion and makeup collections, he resists neat boxes. But pigeonhole we must, because he’s created a new makeup line that demands parsing. His previous collection lived seven dazzling years, from 2013 to 2021, before quietly and mysteriously disappearing from Sephora’s shelves. He’s now back with Marc Jacobs Beauty part deux, an entirely different beast with only a name to link them.
