Zoya Cherkassky: Soviet Childhood

Streaming on Fort Gansevoort

Born in Kiev in 1976, Zoya Cherkassky was 15 when she and her family immigrated to Israel; simultaneously, the Soviet Union collapsed and the culture she knew vanished with it. In an exhibition that evokes this shadow world, Cherkassky depicts brightly-colored figures dressed in Soviet styles and stuck in hemmed-in settings. Nostalgia and humor are part of a painterly naiveté, but the hard lines of Cherkassky’s Soviet “snapshots” are haunting. —E.C.
