The Chinese artist Zhang Enli was born in 1965, in the Jilin Province, just a few miles north of North Korea. His work lifts the ordinary into the extraordinary. Beginning with an everyday object—a marble, a cardboard box, a piece of string—he rethinks it in thin washes of paint. Through loose brushstrokes and charged lines, Zhang captures something immaterial, ethereal, almost transcendent. “After painting for many years,” he said in 2020, “you will find that it is no longer art. It is almost an understanding of life.” This exhibition offers a selection of Zhang’s recent work. —Elena Clavarino
