“Vulnerability is an incredible state,” said Yulia Mahr. “It’s about unzipping yourself and opening yourself out.” Charcoal, ash, and other natural materials combine as a means to communicate Mahr’s experience moving to the United Kingdom from Hungary at a young age—a journey not just between countries but stages of consciousness. Dominated by a hazy monochromatic style, her pieces in the exhibition “Speaking in Dreams” seem to be in conversation with the stark architecture of the Compton Verney Chapel (designed by Lancelot “Capability” Brown). A motif of crows—traditionally messengers between life and death—is part of the show. Mahr’s installation asks viewers to consider the real world versus dream worlds, and the anxiety that haunts both. —Maggie Turner
