Studying at London’s Central Saint Martins in the 1970s, Yoko Terauchi was bothered by the dominant Western thinking that encouraged students to see things in opposition. Instead, she views the world as “One as a Whole.” In line with Zen philosophy, this perspective sees beings simultaneously as single entities and as embodiments of all. Terauchi is known for her sculptures and large-scale installations, which she makes with unaltered, everyday materials. In her first solo show with Hagiwara Projects, she displays a selection of sculptures made of Japanese paper, lead, and plaster. Part of an ongoing series titled “ONE,” this exhibition continues to ask Terauchi’s question: “Why can’t we accept the world as it is?” —Jeanne Malle
