Boris Yeltsin was the president of Russia from 1991 to 1999, but before that he was a party official. In 1989, Yeltsin took an unscheduled trip into a Houston grocery store and was stunned by the plenty available to the average American. His epiphany changed the course of Communism in Russia. Operas through the centuries have often told the story of a hinge in history, but this one does so in a swift 60 minutes, just about the time it takes to do a week’s grocery shopping. A world premiere with music by Evan Mack and libretto by Josh Maguire. —L.J.
