Material and method are forcefully present in woodcuts, with their grooved-lines and printed edges. The practice dates back to the 5th century, and while its earthy evocations remain, its possibilities have developed alongside history. By spanning work from the 1500s to the present, and featuring artists ranging from Albrecht Dürer to Helen Frankenthaler, this exhibition throws the evolution of the woodcut into sharp relief. —C.J.F.
