Women Artists Between Frankfurt and Paris Around 1900

Louise Breslau, Jeune femme et chrysanthèmes, Porträt von Mina Carlson-Bredberg, 1890.

July 10 – Oct 27, 2024
Schaumainkai 63, 60596 Frankfurt am Main, Germany

In the early 1900s, when men were still the titans of the art world, women artists, teachers, and dealers were building their own networks across Europe, from Paris to Frankfurt. Many never saw the spotlight, but some were pioneers who made progress. The German-Swiss painter Louise Breslau, bedridden with chronic asthma, created beguiling portraits with fluttering brushstrokes. The German artist Marg Moll, who worked closely with Henri Matisse and the painter Ida Gerhardi, lived in Paris and was a modernist. Featuring 80 works from the Städel’s collection, this exhibition examines 26 important women artists and their legacies. —Elena Clavarino
