Wendy Red Star

Feb 18 – Apr 25, 2021
2200 Dodge St, Omaha, NE 68102, United States

The artist Wendy Red Star was born in 1981 and raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) Indian Reservation in Montana. A photographer, her practice pulls deeply from research in photographic archives, and explores Native American iconography and colonialist tropes. Using the historical material she finds, Red Star constructs immersive environments that confront romance with reality. In this exhibition, she recreates the 1898 Indian Congress, when 30 Native American tribes convened during Nebraska’s Trans-Mississippi Exposition. Portraits by the Nebraskan Frank Rinehart are spaced about the gallery, while hundreds of Indian Congress members, in miniature, line the walls disquietingly. —E.C.
