Vittore Carpaccio’s depictions of Venice convey the city’s rich splendor while telling stories about everyday life. In vibrant hues, often with an Orientalist touch, he painted the city’s famed squares—Piazza San Marco, for instance—peopled with Italians going about their business. A tiger lurks in one painting’s foreground. Men wear extravagant damask robes. Small details abound and are intriguing. Carpaccio’s first monographic show since 1963, this exhibition traces his development from youth to maturity, and includes drawings, genre paintings, and religious scenes. —E.C.
