Virtual Views: Surrealist Women

Available of the Museum of Modern Art Web site

Ever since the Surrealist gallery was inaugurated at the Museum of Modern Art, students, teachers, and tourists have flocked to it from around the world, making it the museum’s most popular wing. The appeal is hardly a mystery: Surrealism set the subconscious free! The movement made stars of Salvador Dali, René Magritte, and Max Ernst. And it wasn’t just men. Women such as Claude Cahun, Dora Maar, Meret Oppenheim, and Frida Kahlo made powerful statements in the Surrealist arena. MoMA’s online virtual exhibition celebrates Surrealist women in a number of ways—with paintings, poems, games, and more. —E.C.
