The German photographer Vera Lutter is most often associated with her camera obscura images of New York. With grace and power she captures factories, shipyards, airports, and skyline landmarks. In August of 2021, while wildfires were raging across Greece, she set her sights on some of its wonders, using the classical obscura technique to photograph subjects such as the Parthenon, the Temple of Poseidon, and antiquities in marble. Just a few streets away from where some of these images were shot, they are now on view at Gagosian. —Elena Clavarino
