Mayoral revisits the past—1958 to be precise—gathering together works from an exhibition presented more than 60 years ago, the oldest such recreation to date. Why do it? Because this wasn’t just any exhibition. Featuring work by the likes of Antoni Tàpies, Eduardo Chillida, Rafael Canogar, Manolo Millares, Antonio Saura, and Manuel Rivera, the original show in the Venice Biennale’s Spanish Pavilion was the first to fuel international recognition of postwar Spanish art. For Mayoral’s 30th anniversary, step in for a slice of Venetian—and Spanish—history. —E.C.
