Tschabalala Self’s approach to a canvas is painterly, though she doesn’t just use paint. Textiles found and hand-printed, drawings, and pieces from previous works are collaged onto the canvas, along with paint, to make the large figurative images for which she is known. Harlem-born in 1990, Self has said she wishes to “create alternative narratives around the black body.” Those narratives are colorful, frank, bold, and heroic. —L.J.
