In his 2017 book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From the Twentieth Century, Timothy Snyder—a professor of 20th-century European history at Yale—writes that “Americans today are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism in the twentieth century.” Now his 20 lessons for resisting authoritarianism—for instance, “beware the one-party state”—are going graphic. A new edition out next month includes illustrations by Nora Krug that stylize the lessons into a collage scrapbook. As part of the “Writers Bloc Series” from Skylight Books, Snyder and Krug will participate in a virtual discussion of the project with The New Yorker’s Adam Gopnik. Don’t worry if you can’t catch the live stream—Skylight is posting the conversation on its YouTube channel. —J.D.
