As a kinetic sculptor, Tim Prentice faces a peculiar challenge in his artistic practice: the elements. Part engineer and part artist, Prentice uses interlinking wire components to create patterns across flat planes that will then bend and shift as the wind blows or the rain falls, without breaking from the pieces’s originating design principles. His work is an investigation of movement within limits, an artistic take on mathematical precision. This solo exhibition, his first since 1999, is named for another architect-cum-artist, Alexander Calder, who coined the term mobile, and is widely regarded as the forefather of sculpture in motion. The show’s indoor component emphasizes the delicacy and sensitivity of Prentice’s planes, minutely altered by the slightest breeze.
