In 1994, before directing Call the Midwife or The Crown, Philippa Lowthorpe made a 40-minute documentary about three hairdressers in Blackpool. At the time, reality TV had not yet came of age, so not a whole lot happens in those three salons. Nevertheless, there’s an addictive fly-on-the-wall feeling as one watches the women gossip freely about their clients and their hernias. The film got lost in an oversaturated market, but has now re-emerged, almost 30 years later, as a must-see. It’s so hot that Documentary Now!, a show produced by four veterans of Saturday Night Live, made a parody tribute, starring Cate Blanchett and Dame Harriet Walter. “It’s like an old postcard that hasn’t been seen from 1994 to now and has yellowed with age,” Lowthorpe told The Times. Yellow looks good on Three Salons at the Seaside. —Clara Molot
