A Black conductor, Thomas Wilkins, who also has a seat at the table as BSO’s artistic advisor for education and community engagement. Ballet music from Hiawatha, by the British Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912), who was Black, and from The River, by our own Duke Ellington. And as the pièce de résistance, Victor Wooten, the multi-Grammy-winning bassist, raising the rafters as frontman in his own concerto La Lección Tres. Right on! Time to mix it up for legacy audiences—and also to welcome lots of new faces, young and old, that look like the headliners. —M.G.
