In 1987, the artist Alfredo Jaar was commissioned to make a billboard for the only digital screen in New York’s Times Square. His 42-second animation, which played for two weeks, transposed text such as “THIS IS NOT AMERICA” and “THIS IS NOT AMERICA’S FLAG,” over drawings of the American flag. The work was a response, Jaar said, to “the power structure that frames the relationship between the U.S., that co-opts for itself the name ‘America,’ and the ‘other’ countries of the American continent.” Nodding to Jaar in its title, this exhibition explores the symbols and semiotics of the American flag in works by over 20 artists, from Jaar to Jasper Johns to Nicole Eisenman to Laura Aguilar. —Jensen Davis
