Colburn Celebrity Recital: Seong-Jin Cho

With his win at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, the first by a South Korean, Seong-Jin Cho put himself on the map as an artist of deep yet blessedly not-artsy sensitivity as well as commanding technique. As a Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, Cho recently put his imagination as a program builder on elegant display in a recital of interlocking Handel and Brahms. His narrower focus right now is on Ravel, born 150 years ago in the remote Basque town of Cibours. At Carnegie Hall, in New York, and then at Disney Hall, in Los Angeles, Cho surveys the composer’s complete catalogue for solo piano. His recording of this material drops on January 17. Ravel’s two entrancing piano concerti, captured with Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, follow on February 21. —Matthew Gurewitsch
