Jane Austen’s novels, evergreen favorites with readers, are endlessly adaptable to stage and screen. But what to do with The Watsons, the book she left unfinished? With an acknowledged debt to Pirandello, Laura Wade’s play—raved about when it opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2018—features a contemporary character named Laura who becomes embroiled with Austen’s characters over control of the story.
