The Visit

Jan 31 – May 13, 2020
Upper Ground, South Bank, London SE1 9PX, UK

The Visit, Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s tale of revenge, first haunted audiences in 1956, and this adaptation from the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner promises to be equally eerie. The original play begins when Claire returns to her hometown, Güllen, as the world’s wealthiest woman. With the power to relieve the town of its postwar economic malaise, she makes a single demand in exchange for her help: the townspeople must kill one of their own—the man who impregnated Claire and then betrayed her. Kushner relocates the tale to upstate New York, where a postwar recession creates the same compromised conditions. Lesley Manville stars alongside Hugo Weaving. —C.J.F.
