André Breton’s first Surrealist Manifesto was written in 1924 (“Psychic automatism in its pure state,” he called Surrealism). His second manifesto came out in 1929. That same year the Catalan artist Salvador Dalí helped Louis Buñuel make the first masterpiece of Surrealist film, Un chien Andalou. 1929 was a big year for Surrealism and this exhibition examines why, with works by Dalí, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, Yves Tanguy, René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Brassaï, and more. —L.J.
