When asked what he loved most about Russia, the composer Igor Stravinsky answered, “The violent Russian spring that seemed to begin in an hour and was like the whole earth cracking.” It’s a good description of his Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), which certainly cracked open dance at its premiere in 1913. The beloved Chinese choreographer Yang Liping brings her version of Le Sacre to the Bolshoi. Look for those leafy green “fingernails”—as if spring is sprouting from the dancers’ hands and bodies. —L.J.
