For many, the Norwegian director Stefan Herheim’s Parsifal for the Bayreuth Festival in 2008 landed with the force of revelation. Riddled with symbolism both obvious and abstruse, dense with cross references both on target and tangential, the production established Herheim as the Stephen Hawking among contemporary interpreters of Wagnerian cosmology. The Herheim “Ring” the world has been clamoring for ever since has been a long time coming. To judge from published teasers for the four “Ring” operas, Herheim’s working hypotheses are surprisingly mainstream. Well, we shall see what we shall see, and not even viewers at home will have long to wait. A video release is promised for spring 2022. —M.G.
