An amateur drama troupe lands a name-brand theater as the venue for its whodunit thriller. As the title of the play warns, the inexperienced cast isn’t exactly equipped to put on a seamless show. They confuse onstage life with offstage life and endless gags ensue—bonked heads, sprayed fire extinguishers, felled furniture. The Play That Goes Wrong traveled from London to Broadway, where it was produced by J. J. Abrams, directed by Mark Bell, and ran until early 2019, “as close to a demolition derby,” according to The New York Times, “as we are likely to see on Broadway.” It now returns for a run off-Broadway, with Bell once again directing. —J.D.
