The Pencil is Key: Drawings by Incarcerated Artists

Oct 11, 2019 – Jan 5, 2020
35 Wooster St, New York, NY 10013

“Prisons do not disappear social problems,” Angela Y. Davis wrote in 1998, “they disappear human beings.” The prisoner may be disappeared, but he or she still lives, suffers, and hopes. Art not only brings a revitalizing sense of self to those behind bars; for some it brings life’s calling as an artist. This exhibition displays drawings from all over the world, and includes the work of incarcerated artists from the past—a French revolutionary, Russian political prisoners—as well as exceptional recent work by inmates. —C.J.F.
