In the 1960s, the writer S. E. Hinton characterized the tone of young adult novels as “Mary Jane went to the prom.” Her Young Adult book The Outsiders (1967), written when she was still a teenager, was a rebellion. Set in Oklahoma, it centers on 14-year-old Ponyboy, a wayward kid without parents. His gang, the working-class Greasers, are feuding with the middle-class Socs. They curse, drink, and fight. Francis Ford Coppola turned the beloved book into a beloved movie that premiered in 1983 and starred Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, and Patrick Swayze. Now comes the musical, which makes its debut on Broadway. Written by Adam Rapp, the show features lyrics by Justin Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival. —Jensen Davis
