The Lord of Cries

July 17 – Aug 17, 2021
301 Opera Dr, Santa Fe, NM 87506, USA

Dracula meets Dionysus in the world premiere of John Corigliano’s first opera since the lollapalooza The Ghosts of Versailles, unveiled at the Met in 1991. Corigliano’s librettist this time is his husband Mark Adamo, the composer-librettist of the hit Little Women (1988) and four subsequent, excellently crafted operas. (There’s precedent for such divided labors of love: Gian Carlo Menotti, another operatic all-rounder, gave his longtime partner Samuel Barber a similar assist on the cult favorite Vanessa.) The mashup of Greek tragedy and Victorian Grand Guignol promises to set heads spinning. The star countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo leads the witches’ sabbath as Dionysus, orchestrator of chaos. The ubiquitous James Darrah, a past master in head trips, directs; Johannes Debus conducts. —M.G.
