In 1888, Henrik Ibsen debuted The Lady from the Sea. It was inspired by a classic Scandinavian tale that tells of a woman who leaves her husband for a merman only to return to land one day, wondering if she made the right choice. In Ibsen’s version, the woman is named Ellida, her husband is a doctor, and her lover is a sailor who returns home after fleeing the murder of his captain. Known for his modernization of tragedies that include Yerma, Medea, and Phaedra, Simon Stone now adapts and directs Ibsen’s play. Alicia Vikander, who won an Academy Award in 2016 for The Danish Girl, makes her stage debut in the lead role. Love Actually’s Andrew Lincoln plays her husband, and The Brutalist’s Joe Alwyn joins them as a character named Heath. —Jeanne Malle
