The Hoodie

Dec 1, 2019 – Apr 12, 2020
Museumpark 25, 3015 CB Rotterdam, Netherlands

A hood is defined as “a type of soft head-covering which often fits closely about the face and sometimes hangs over the back of the neck.” The hoodie, however, is a look unto itself, with a varied and sometimes tragic subtext. In the hands of the writer and curator Lou Stoppard, the hoodie’s history—from the Pope’s classic garb to Janelle Monae’s crystal-hooded Ralph Lauren gown at this year’s Academy Awards—is analyzed semantically and politically. Displays by Vetements and Off-White accompany specially commissioned works. —J.V.
