Two years ago, Michael Caine told The Telegraph that he’s “sort of retired now.” It wasn’t the first time the British actor had made such a claim. In fact, The Great Escaper pulled him out of retirement. If Caine decides that it’s his last film, well, what a lovely finish. Starring alongside Glenda Jackson, who died in June 2023, Caine plays Bernard Jordan, a real-life W.W. II veteran who made headlines in 2014, when he escaped his nursing home in Hove, England, crossed the English Channel, and attended the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in France. “I just loved the character of Bernie” says Caine. “I thought he was incredible, and it’s so beautifully written.” After premiering in U.K. theaters in 2023, it’s now available for streaming on PBS. —Clara Molot
