In February 2022, after Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine began, the Ukrainian playwright and actor Sasha Denisova fled Moscow and found her way to Poland. Once there she interviewed fellow refugees and thought about what would give Ukrainians hope during the war. The answer: “A trial of Putin and his government.” Denisova has turned that vision into The Gaaga, a play about a 17-year-old Ukrainian teenager who has lost her family in the war and is hiding in a bomb shelter. Alone, she dreams of putting Putin on trial for war crimes. The site-specific show premiered in Poland, one year after the war started. Now it heads to Boston. —Jensen Davis
