There’s more than one Crown. While we must wait until November for the fifth season of Peter Morgan’s masterpiece to arrive on Netflix, there are far worse ways to wile away the days than immersing oneself in The Empress, a similarly lavish Netflix production focused on another crowned head of Europe. The rebellious, tempestuous Elisabeth of Austria (Devrim Lingnau) was all the rage in the 19th century. Now, the intrigue of her court and her much-discussed marriage with Emperor Franz Joseph are both gilded and dissected over the course of six episodes. There’s plenty of politics, but also enough romance and froth to keep the plot humming and the pulse, occasionally, racing. —Ashley Baker
