In the film The Zone of Interest, we experience the horrors of the Holocaust through the eyes of its perpetrators. The central character is Rudolf Höss, a German S.S. officer who lives with his family in Auschwitz, next to the concentration camp that he presides over. Höss, in fact, was a real person, and his son, Hans-Jürgen Höss, is the subject of a new documentary. The Commandant’s Shadow follows the 87-year-old son’s return to Auschwitz, where he sees the home in which he grew up and reckons with the sins of his father. Central to this stirring film is the proximity of our world to that of the Nazi’s rise to power. Only one generation separates Hans-Jürgen from the most barbaric of all evils—and all the while, Rudolf Höss’s house still stands. —Jack Sullivan

The Commandant’s Shadow is also available for streaming on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.
