The Best We Could

May 19 – June 7, 2020
131 W 55th St, New York, NY 10019, USA

The road-trip story and the family drama are two equally American narratives—literary versions of apple pie—and yet, they are different in almost every other way. In the former, the road-tripper searches the world for newness and, more profoundly, the self within. In the latter, home (and its stationary scenery) is a microcosm for prohibitive society, bound by intimate bonds and conflicting loyalties. The Best We Could intertwines these two narratives, taking us on a father-daughter road trip. Their relationship changes as the scene out their window moves from farmland to cityscapes, and tensions both cultural and familial are exposed. From an exciting new playwright, a spin on two tried-and-true tales. —C.J.F.
