The Beanie Bubble

Elizabeth Banks and Zach Galifianakis in The Beanie Bubble.

An obnoxious billionaire, rickety business dealings, a frenzied gold rush. A recipe for inevitable disaster, yes, but also worthy fodder for an entertaining film. As it happens, the Beanie Babies craze of the 1990s embodies these very elements, albeit catalyzed by small, unassuming, and endearing stuffed animals. The Beanie Bubble, a relatively embellished retelling of the toys’ story, focuses much of its attention on Ty Warner, the madcap magnate and eventual felon at the helm of the fervor, played by Zach Galifianakis. “[Ty Warner] so misunderstood the craze he had inspired that he destroyed it in one day with a foolish, arrogant stunt,” reads a New York Times review of the 2015 book on which the movie is based. Suddenly the casting of Galifianakis seems intuitive, if not obligatory. His presence alongside Sarah Snook, Elizabeth Banks, and the Australian actress Geraldine Viswanathan—who keeps stealing the show—holds the film together and generates its highest peaks.
