“I want to change the world. Attack the elite. Overturn the hierarchy,” Terry Deary, the man who wrote the beloved “Horrible Histories” book series, has said. “Look at my stories and you’ll notice that the villains are always, always, those in power.” Deary began his illustrated, child-friendly series on British history—it now adds up to more than 60 titles—with two books in 1993. One of them, Terrible Tudors, is a charming overview of the five brutal rulers that made up the Tudor era, from the bizarre foods they ate to the curse words they used. A stage adaptation of the book is back in the West End for a second summer. Ben Martin and Emma Swann zip through the stories with the help of puppets. —Jensen Davis
