Technicolour Malaise

Calling itself “an antidote to social distancing,” this virtual exhibition features works by Alias Trate, a Canadian artist based in London, whose real identity is unknown. The identities of his subjects aren’t known either. Although Trate’s paintings appear to be portraits they are not, though some features do have sources. “There are always elements and traits you pick up from people,” he said in 2018. His title for this show, “Technicolor Malaise,” describes the uneasy, melancholic feel that has been characteristic of these days in solitary confinement. Faces and torsos are clothed in rich, energized color, a nod to emotive states. —E.C.
