“Praise the lord for Tammy Faye,’” the critic Matt Wolf wrote in his review of the musical’s London premiere, in 2022. That same year, Variety called the show “riotously entertaining” and “full of unexpected laughs.” And how could it not be? The music is by Sir Elton John and the lyrics are by the Scissor Sisters’s co-vocalist Jake Shears. The story is also far from dull. Set in the 1970s, it follows Tammy Faye Bakker, a pastor’s wife who becomes nationally beloved for her charming and joyful religious cable program. Every tale has its twist—in this one, it’s the jealous competitors who conspire to sabotage Tammy’s success. Katie Brayben stars in the title role of this Broadway production.
