“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction,” wrote Virginia Woolf in her 1929 essay “A Room of One’s Own.” The room Woolf is talking about is both literal and figurative. It’s a place to work, but it is also space, and the freedom to take up space, to have sovereignty over space. When it comes to making art, the size of one’s ambition is already a statement. This exhibition looks at 50 modern and contemporary female artists who’ve used space and scale to muscle their way into male-dominated realms.
