The suffrage movement as it has never been seen before. Sylvia is a forcible new musical that pulls back the curtain on Sylvia Pankhurst and her raucous family. Told through a brassy combination of dance, hip hop, soul, and funk, with music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde, and words co-written by Kate Prince and Priya Parmar, the story explores both the successes and the turbulence this group of women faced while campaigning for the vote. The play opens inside the corrosive 1913 meeting of the Women’s Social and Political Union—from which Sylvia is ousted—and continues to catalogue the combination of passion and politics that ultimately shredded the Pankhurst family from the inside out. —B.A.
