“Actually, abstraction is difficult for me,” says the multidisciplinary artist Suki Seokyeong Kang, “but it’s also fun, like a daily mystery.” Over the years, the artist has studied the ancient paintings of mountains and waters—sanshuwa in Korean—that are housed in the Leeum collection. Observing the mountain ridges, Kang found herself thinking of ways she could recreate them in a contemporary style. She settled on structures made of steel sheets, which curve as gracefully as the mountain peaks. “I made four different mountains,” Kang says, “for spring, summer, fall, and winter.” In this large exhibition, the series “Mountains” joins over 120 paintings, sculptures, installations, and films by Kang. All find inspiration in East Asian poetry, music, dance, and art. —Elena Clavarino
