Noir films like The Maltese Falcon (1941) and The Big Sleep (1946) wear sharp shadows, but they hold our interest thanks to savvy plots and the sterling performances of their worldly, calculating heroes. Director Fernando Meirelles doesn’t rely on visual bells and whistles to heighten the suspense of Sugar, his new eight-part Apple TV series. Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, a private eye patently modeled on Humphrey Bogart and company, though he’s more courteous and mysterious. Sugar embarks on a missing persons case—his specialty—at the behest of a Hollywood producer whose granddaughter has vanished. Prepare for a massive twist (no spoilers!) that not even Raymond Chandler could’ve predicted. —Jack Sullivan
