Stimmung, by Karlheinz Stockhausen

Mar 19–27, 2022
115 S Pine Ave Suite 550, Long Beach, 90802, United States

Karlheinz Stockhausen was one of the most mystifying gurus of 20th- and early-21st-century composition, and Stimmung is one of his most mystifying creations. Running just an hour or so, it is also one of his most accessible. (His opera Licht, in seven self-standing parts named for the days of the week, clocks in at 29 hours.) The punning title may be translated as Mood or Tuning, and mood and/or tuning are the things the music explores. Six voices, singing into microphones at very, very low volume, recite text consisting of the names of gods from dozens of religions, the days of the week in more languages than you would recognize the names of, pure vowel tones, and who knows what phonetic flotsam and jetsam. Performing in an abandoned grocery store (venue unpublished as we go to press), the Long Beach Opera cast will not only sing but cook dinner, to be shared by all once the musical segment has concluded. Be seated. Hush! Bon appétit. —Matthew Gurewitsch
