The 35-year-old playwright Clare Barron once told The Guardian, “Our bodies are wild and our sexuality is wild.” The quote doubles as a log line for the four plays she has written and professionally staged. Take Dance Nation, a 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist. It looks at a team of 13-year-old dancers desperate to win a Tampa Bay dance competition—and even more desperate to understand what puberty is doing to their bodies and desires. Premiering at the Atlantic Theater, Barron’s new play, Shhhh, returns to the theme of sexuality, but pushes into realms of kink, trauma, and revenge. In addition to writing and directing the play, Barron also acts in it. —J.D.
