Shchukin: Biography of a Collection

June 19 – Sept 15, 2019
Ulitsa Volkhonka, 12, Moskva, Russia, 119019

In the early 1900s, French Impressionist masterpieces were migrating to Moscow palaces, thanks to the Russian collectors Sergei Shchukin and his three brothers Pyotr, Dmitry, and Ivan. Through the siblings’ joint collections, the Pushkin Museum tells the story of the Shchukin family, its taste and prescience. For example, Matisse’s modernist Dance was painted at Sergei’s request. He displayed it proudly, despite public mockery. Monet, Cézanne, Gaugin, Matisse, Picasso, Derain, Rousseau—more than 450 works from seven museums make up this extraordinary exhibition. —C.J.F.
